Ice Dam Water Damage

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Ice Dam Water Damage Call SERVPRO of West Mahoning County at the first sign of water damage 330-609-8543

What is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam is a accumulation of ice in a gutter or on the edge of the roof that forces water against the grade of the roof and into a home or business.

Ice dams can also form around skylights, vents or valleys in the roof.

Ice dams form when heat from inside the structure rises through the ceiling and warms the roof. Snow falls on the heated parts of the roof and melts. The melted snow then flows down the roof until it reaches the part of the roof that is lower than 32°F. The water freezes and begins to form an ice dam.

As more snow melts and refreezes, the ice dam can grow larger and pools behind the large wall of ice.

Over time the water works its way through the shingles or other roofing materials and flows through the roof decking down through the ceiling, interior walls and other parts of the structure.

If left unresolved, the water damage can lead to microbial growth.

If you notice an ice dam and water intrusion to your home or business this winter, call SERVPRO of West Mahoning County 330-609-8543

Our highly-trained cleanup & restoration professionals have the experience and resources available to help make ice dam damage "Like it never even happened."

When water damage occurs in your Boardman area the SERVPRO professionals are ready to handle the situation. In order to properly get rid of the water and get your home or business back to normal we train our professionals to understand the factors of water damage restoration. We follow the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) which sets the standards for cleaning and water damage restoration. They provide three different types of liquid involved.

Category 1:  Liquid from a clean and sanitary source, such as faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc. However, category 1 can quickly become category 2.

Category 2:  Liquid having a level of contaminated that may cause illness or discomfort if ingested. Sources may include dishwasher, washing machine, flush from sink drains, and toilet overflow.

Category 3: Worst classification being grossly unsanitary. It can cause severe illness or death if ingested. Sources include sewer backup, river or stream overflow, and stagnant liquid that have bacterial growth.

If you have water damage occur, call the professionals to avoid ingesting and handling these liquids unprotected at (330)609-8543

Frozen Pipes

2/9/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Frozen Pipes Use a blow dryer to warm pipes

During winter in your Canfield area pipes often freeze during winter months. When temperatures get down around 20 degrees and sometimes above if the pipes are exposed to cold windy air usually due to cracks in walls pipes will freeze. When water in the pipes freeze it expands into ice putting pressure on the pipe and can cause it to burst leading to a broken pipe and a flood in your home. Pipes that are metal or water lines to things like pools, sprinklers, and interior pipes can burst no matter what the water is flowing through if it’s frozen. To prevent pipes from freezing it’s important to keep garage doors closed if water supply is in garage, open cabinets and doors, let water drip in facets, and keep it warm in the area where pipes are. If frozen pipes occur, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe; apply heat to the section of pipe, but avoid using open flame devices. To avoid this problem keep pipes warm. In the event that your pipes burst and flooding occurs, call the professionals to extract the water and make it like it never even happened at (330)609-8543. Also follow us on Facebook for updates and promotions.

Ice Dams

1/3/2017 (Permalink)

How Do Ice Dams Form?

Usually after a snow storm there is a pile of snow sitting on the roof above your attic. After the weather warms above 32 degrees Fahrenheit to melt the under layer of the snow it causes the top layer to form into a mound of ice.

Damages They Cause:

After the ice dam reaches it full capacity, the melted water begins to seep underneath the shingles along with dripping into the insulation and down to the ceilings.

How to Remove the Ice Dams?

Removing ice dams can easily lead to damages even if extremely careful. To efficiently remove the ice dams call a professional to prevent damages to your shingles.

Prevention:

To keep your Boardman home safe try one of these tips-

A simple prevention method is simply scraping the snow off of the roof the day it falls.

Another way to prevent ice dams is by installing heated cables before the winter begins.

Pipe Burst

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Pipe bursts

There are a few reasons pipes can burst, but the main one is because of freezing conditions.  Other reasons pipes many burst are due to age, misuse, or damage. When pipes burst they cause damage to property, homes, and sometimes entire areas of a town and roads for days. The most devastating part of pipe bursts aren’t the cost of the repair or even the loss of water, it is the damage that the water does to the homes. In one day the water accumulation in a house could be 9,600 liters of water. Winter is here, so by keeping your homes correctly heated and your pipes properly protected you can avoid a pipe burst in you Canfield home. If you have a pipe burst, close the stopcock fully and open the taps in the home to remove water from the system, stay away from all electrical devices, move any furniture away as soon as possible, call your emergency plumber, and finally call SERVPRO to take care of your water damages.

Water Damage Flooded Basement in Canfield, OH Call SERVPRO of West Mahoning County to clean, dry and restore your Canfield, OH basement

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Canfield basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

If water damage is not handled quickly and properly, it can cause severe damage to your home’s structure not to mention the potential harmful health effects of mold.
