Mahoning County Ice Dams
The cold weather is coming. And residents of West Mahoning County know all too well about ice and snow.
But have you ever heard of the term “ice dam”? And is this something Ohioans need to worry about?
An “ice dam” is likely to occur when the temperature in your attic is above freezing. But not for long…the melted ice runs down the roof and hits the colder eaves, it then refreezes creating an “ice dam.” If this cycle repeats over several days, the freezing snowmelt builds up and forms a dam of ice, behind which water pools up into large puddles, or "ponds". The ponding water can then back up under the roof covering and leak into the attic or along exterior walls.
The perfect recipe for an ice dam is when outside air temperatures are in the low 20s (°F) for several days with several inches of snow on the roof. Ohio has seen mild winters the last few years, but this is not to be taken lightly by homeowners, since Ohio is known to drop into the low 20s and below.
According to State Farm Insurance…here are the warning signs to look for when an ice dams are starting.
- sagging ridgeline
- drooping ceilings
- water leaks on interior walls and ceilings
- jammed doors
- cracked interior walls near the center of your home
- creaking sounds
